| October:
Koean American literature |
| Wow!
That’s the whole gang, pre-program! Back row (from left to right):
office assistant Marci Xiong, program specialist Gina Inocencio, development
consultant Francey Youngberg, KACC project director Terry Hong. Front
row: writer Heinz Insu Fenkl, writer Don Lee, Professor Elaine Kim,
writer Nora Okja Keller, program director Franklin Odo, program assistant
Noriko Sanefuji and Sogi Fellow Jodie Atkinson. |
A
pre-program pow-wow as our distinguished guests check out the podium
from whence they will hold forth the audience: (from left to right)
Elaine Kim, Don Lee, Nora Okja Keller and Heinz Insu Fenkl. |
| |
| Our
favorite Boss-man, Dr. Franklin Odo, happily welcomes the crowd.
What’s not to smile about? We had a fabulous program that
night! |
Terry
Hong, project director of the Korean American Centennial Commemoration,
can only hope to be as entertaining as the Boss-man. |
| Professor
extraordinaire Elaine Kim, arguably the foremost authority on Korean
American literature, offers a quick overview of the field. |
Nora
Okja Keller reads a harrowing passage from her phenomenal debut novel,
Comfort Woman. |
| |
| Heinz
Insu Fenkl reads a touching story from Skull Water, his upcoming
sequel to Memories of My Ghost Brother. Memoir or fiction?
This time he gets to decide. |
Don
Lee regales the audience with parts of “Domo Arigato,”
a bittersweet, though often comical short story included in his pithy,
entertaining collection, Yellow: Stories. |
| |
| During
the lively Q&A, the men share a laugh. |
…
and the women enjoy themselves, as well. |
| |
| Our
gang of four in grand discussion... |
And
outside, the books sales were incredibly brisk – even the bookstore
folks were oh so surprised! |

THE
RECEPTION
| Ah,
food glorious food. Elaine, Don and Nora hold court at the toothsome
reception, held in the beautiful library of the Smithsonian Castle. |
And
in spite of the jaunt across the dark Mall, it was sitting-room
only … many came and enjoyed the fabulous food, provided once
again by Han Sung Oak. |
| |
| A
lovely view from the top as our Francey Youngberg tries to capture
the crowds below from the balcony. Oh Nora, oh Don, oh Elaine, oh
Heinz … wherefore art thous? |

| The
view below … eat, eat and eat! |
But
we poor staff folks are still waiting at the end of the line to be
fed … poor little Marci is hungriest of all! From left to right:
Terry Hong, Jodie Atkinson, Annie Huynh, Marci Xiong and Noriko Sanefuji. |

| Even
the stairwell was well used this time! |
